Nelli Korniyenko was born in 1939. She is a theatre critic, theatre expert, and theatre and public figure. In 1993 she received her PhD in Art History and in 2006 she became an academician of the National Academy of Arts of Ukraine. She was awarded the Les Kurbas Prize in 1998, the Order of Princess Olha, 3rd Class, in 1999, and the Gold Medal of the Academy of Arts of Ukraine in 2007.
Honoured Artist of Ukraine since 2015. She studied at Kyiv University, where she graduated in 1961. In Moscow, she worked in the Sociology of Artistic Culture Sector of the All-Union Institute of Art Theory and History from 1971 to 1982, followed by a position as a Scientific Editor for the Joint Editorial Boards of UNESCO Journals from 1982 to 1992.
Since 1993, she has been working as a leading researcher at the Department of Ethnic Art at the Rylskyi Institute of Art History, Folklore and Ethnography of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. In 1994, she initiated the creation of the Les Kurbas National Centre for Theatre Art, where she held the position of director from 1995 to 2012. She founded a scientific field in the humanities - the Synergy of Artistic Culture - and conducted research in the field of philosophical anthropology.
