Admission Procedure to the National Academy of Arts of Ukraine

Academy Membership

The Academy consists of full members (academicians), corresponding members, honorary academicians and foreign members elected by the General Meeting of the Academy, as well as all scientific and creative workers in scientific and creative institutions and organisations of the Academy.

Full Members (Academicians)

Academicians are elected among Ukrainian artists who have achieved remarkable success in the development and enrichment of Ukrainian artistic culture, in scientific, artistic and pedagogical activities, as well as art historians holding, as a rule, a doctorate or a professorship.

    Academicians are elected for life from among the corresponding members of the Academy.

    An Academician has the right to vote at all stages of the election.

    Academicians who have left Ukraine for permanent residence and become citizens of another state shall acquire the status of foreign members of the Academy. The seats vacated by them shall be declared vacant by the Presidium.

    After reaching the age of 75, vacancies for new academics shall be opened within the available budget funds. Academicians who have reached this age retain all the rights provided for by the Charter (Statute) of the NAA of Ukraine.

    Elections of Academicians are held at least once every three years, subject to vacancies and in conditions of wide awareness of the scientific and artistic community.

    The announcement of the Presidium of the Academy on the election of Academicians shall be published not later than three months before the election day in the print media for countrywide distribution.

Academicians Elections Stages

Candidates Nomination

The candidates for academicians shall be nominated and the documents shall be accepted within forty-five days from the date of publication of the announcement of the elections.
The right to nominate candidates for academicians in the fields of science and art specified in the notice is granted to academicians, corresponding members, academic councils of scientific institutions, art education institutions, artistic councils of artistic groups, boards of creative unions, and public administration bodies in the field of culture.

Lists of Nominated and Registered Candidates

Lists of nominated and registered candidates for academicians shall be published no later than one month before the election day in the print media of countrywide circulation.

Discussions in Research and Creative Teams

Candidates for election to academicians are widely discussed in research and creative teams. The results of such discussions are brought to the attention of the members of the departments. At the General Meeting of the departments and the General Meeting of the Academy, an objective discussion in respect of the candidates is created.

Establishment of an Expert Commission

In order to establish the relevance of the nominated candidates' specialities to the vacancies announced and to determine the contribution to the development of art and culture, and national art, the Presidium of the Academy shall establish an expert commission from among academicians.

Elections at the General Meeting of the Department

The election of candidates shall be held at the General Meeting of the Department by secret ballot of academicians.
The election shall be deemed valid if at least two-thirds of the academicians and corresponding members of the respective department are present at the meeting.
The persons elected as candidates for membership in the Academy shall be deemed to be those in favour of whom at least two-thirds (out of those, who participated in the voting) of the members of the Academy's department voted.

Elections at the General Meeting of the Academy

Academicians are elected at the General Meeting of the Academy by secret ballot of academicians.
The election shall be deemed valid if at least two-thirds of the academicians and corresponding members of the Academy are present at the meeting.
Persons for whom at least two-thirds of the academicians voted (out of those, who participated in the voting) shall be deemed elected.

Publication of the List of the Newly Elected Academicians

The list of newly elected academicians is released to the nationwide print media.

Corresponding Members

Corresponding members of the Academy are Ukrainian figures of national art, whose creative work includes outstanding works of art, and scientists who have a degree or academic title, have achieved remarkable success in creating art research works, implementing general art projects and programmes, and merge scientific, pedagogical and creative activities.

    Corresponding members are elected for life.

    A Corresponding Member shall have the right to vote in the election of candidates for corresponding members at the General Meetings of the Departments and the General Meeting of the Academy, as well as foreign members and honorary academicians of the Academy at its General Meeting.

    Corresponding members of the Academy who have left Ukraine for permanent residence and become citizens of another state shall acquire the status of foreign members of the Academy. The seats of corresponding members of the Academy vacated by them shall be declared vacant by the Presidium.

    Upon reaching the age of 75 years by the corresponding members of the Academy, vacancies for new corresponding members of the Academy shall be opened within the available budget funds. Corresponding members of the Academy who have reached the specified age retain all the rights provided for by the Charter (Statute) of the NAA of Ukraine.

    The election of Corresponding Members of the Academy shall be held at least once every three years, subject to vacancies and in conditions of wide awareness of the scientific and artistic community.

Corresponding members are elected at the General Meeting of the Academy by secret ballot of academicians and corresponding members of the Academy.

The election shall be deemed valid if at least two-thirds of the academicians and corresponding members of the Academy are present at the meeting.

Persons for whom at least two-thirds of the academicians and corresponding members of the Academy voted (out of those, who participated in the voting) shall be deemed elected.

Honorary Academicians of the NAA of Ukraine

Honorary Academicians are elected among citizens of Ukraine and foreigners who have made a significant contribution to the development of art and culture research, national art, as well as managers and employees of scientific and creative institutions, art education institutions, organisations and establishments that have achieved high results in the field of art as well as art and culture research and whose successes are recognised by the public.

    Honorary members of the Academy are elected for life.

    Honorary Academicians have the right to an advisory vote.

Honorary Academicians Elections

Candidates for honorary academicians are nominated by the General Meeting of the Departments and elected by the General Meeting of the Academy. Academicians and corresponding members participate in the election. Elections are considered valid if at least two-thirds of the academicians and corresponding members of the Academy are present at the Meeting. Persons shall be deemed elected if at least two-thirds of the Academy members who participated in the voting have voted for them. 
By the decisions of the General Meeting of the Department and the General Meeting of the Academy, candidates may be nominated and elected to the position of honorary academician by open voting. 

Foreign Members of the NAA of Ukraine

Foreign Members of the Academy are elected among scientists, cultural and artistic figures — foreigners known to the international scientific and artistic community — who work in collaboration with scientific and creative institutions, enterprises and organisations under the jurisdiction of the Academy, and art associations of Ukraine.

    Foreign Members of the Academy are elected for life.

    Foreign Members of the Academy have the right to an advisory vote.

Elections of Foreign Members of the Academy

Candidates for foreign members of the Academy are nominated by the General Meeting of the Departments and elected by the General Meeting of the Academy. Academicians and corresponding members of the Academy shall participate in the election. The election shall be deemed valid if at least two-thirds of the academicians and corresponding members of the Academy are present at the Meeting. Persons shall be deemed elected if at least two-thirds of the Academy members who took part in the voting have voted for them.

By the decisions of the General Meeting of the Department and the General Meeting of the Academy, candidates may be nominated and elected as foreign members of the Academy by open voting.
