After graduating from the Faculty of History and Theory at the P. I. Tchaikovsky Kyiv Conservatory (now Ukrainian National Tchaikovsky Academy of Music), Olena Berehova pursued postgraduate and doctoral studies at the Department of History of Ukrainian Music and Music Folklore. She received her PhD in Art Studies and the title of Associate Professor, later obtaining a Doctorate in Art Studies and the rank of Professor. Since 2002, she has been engaged in academic and teaching activities at music academies in Kyiv and Dnipro, having supervised five PhD dissertations in Art Studies, three doctoral theses, and more than thirty master’s theses in Musical Arts.
Since 2009, she has been conducting research at the Institute for Cultural Research of the National Academy of Arts of Ukraine. From October 1, 2021, to the present, she has served as Deputy Director for Research at this institution.
Olena Berehova’s scholarly output includes six single-authored monographs, two textbooks, over 100 academic articles, and more than 200 publicistic materials in Ukrainian periodicals on pressing issues of culture, musical art, and the cultural life of Ukraine. She actively promotes Ukrainian art studies internationally: a number of her works have been published in English and Polish in prestigious European scholarly journals. She is both an organizer and participant of numerous national and international conferences (including in Poland, Germany, Lithuania, Canada, the USA, and others) and serves on the editorial boards of professional publications such as Multidisciplinary Cultural and Humanities Review, Kulturolohichna Dumka (Cultural Thought), Khudozhnia Kultura. Aktualni Problemy (Artistic Culture. Current Issues), and Muzykoznavcha Dumka Dnipropetrovshchyny (Musicological Thought of Dnipropetrovsk Region).
She is a member of the Working Group on the History of Music in Central and Eastern Europe at Leipzig University, Head of the Expert Group of Scholars from the Institute for Cultural Research of the NAA of Ukraine and the Institute of History of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine on the issue of decolonizing the cultural space.
