Stepan Koval was born on July 18, 1965, in Novomoskovsk, Dnipropetrovsk region. He first graduated from the Faculty of Architecture at the Ukrainian Academy of Arts (1993, Kyiv, under N. B. Chmutina), earning the qualification of artist-architect. Later, he graduated from the Kyiv National Ivan Karpovych Karpenko-Karyi Theatre, Cinema and Television University (1998), specializing in animated film directing.
Koval is a contemporary director working across various animation techniques, constantly experimenting in his creative practice. He gained wide recognition with the animated film Tram No. 9 (2002), whose humor and ironic detachment appeal to audiences of all ages. Many of his works draw on strong folkloric and historical foundations. Notable examples include Poverty (2008), Be Firm (2009), the series My Country — Ukraine, and the animated film Surname in the Pocket (2019), which addresses the Holodomor of 1932–1933, as well as Language — Colorful, based on the poems of Hryhoriy Falkovych. Koval’s filmography includes over 25 projects that explore themes of memory, identity, and freedom.From 1995 to 2004, Koval worked as a computer graphics artist for the broadcasters Zoloti Vorota TV, Alternatyva TV, VIkna News Agency, and TET TV Channel. Since 2007, he has served as chief director at the Novatorfilm animation studio.Since 2019, he has taught in the Department of Film Directing and Screenwriting at the Kyiv National Ivan Karpovych Karpenko-Karyi Theatre, Cinema and Television University. Beginning in 2021, he has also been teaching animation at the Faculty of Graphics of the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture.
He is a member of the National Union of Cinematographers of Ukraine.
