Serhiy Mykhalchuk is a member of the National Union of Cinematographers of Ukraine, a laureate of the Oleksandr Dovzhenko State Prize of Ukraine for his outstanding creative contribution to the feature film Mamay, recipient of the “Gold Medal” of the National Academy of Arts of Ukraine (2004), the “Grand Gold Medal of the National Academy of Arts of Ukraine” (2024), and a two-time laureate of the national film award “Zolota Dzyha” — Best Director of Photography (2019 and 2024). He holds several combat awards and distinctions. He was awarded the Order “For Merit,” 3rd Class in 2021.
In 1996, he began his career as a cinematographer at Filmotechnik. Today, Serhiy Mykhalchuk is one of the most renowned Ukrainian cinematographers, exceptionally skilled at translating his unconventional ideas into imagery that resonates deeply with audiences. For this reason, most projects involving Serhiy Mykhalchuk are effectively destined for success among a wide audience, which is invaluable for the further development of the national film industry.
A gifted master of visual expression, Serhii Mykhalchuk has made a significant contribution to the advancement of both national and global visual culture (screen arts, photography).
At present, his creative portfolio includes 19 full-length feature films. In addition, he has worked on documentary films, television films, music videos, and commercials. Working across various forms and genres of cinema, Serhiy Mykhalchuk has earned acclaim and admiration from audiences, particularly for such films as The Lover (2002), Mamay (2003), My Stepbrother Frankenstein (2004), The Sin, The Guide (both in 2013), and Dovbush (2023).
Serhiy Mykhalchuk has been recognised with a remarkable number of professional awards from the world’s most prestigious film festivals. Among them: the Kodak Award (1995); Best Cinematography Award at the Prologue International Film Festival (1995); Best Cinematography Award at the San Sebastián International Film Festival (Spain, 2002); winner of the Silver Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival (2015); laureate of the NYCTV Award for Best Cinematography (New York, USA, 2018); recipient of the Special Jury Diploma at the Odesa International Film Festival “For Visual Solution” (2014) and the Diploma of the “Shot in Ukraine” Festival in the category “Best Cinematographer” (2015).
In 2016, Serhii Mykhalchuk received the Laureate Diploma of the national program “Person of the Year–2015” in the category “Artist of the Year.”
