Under the supervision of Doctor of Art Studies, academician, and professor N. Herasymova-Persydska, he defended his Candidate of Art Studies dissertation at the postgraduate programme of the P. His academic interests are focused on the theory of psychological and intonational-artistic imagery of the universe, interpretation of compositional and performance styles, and the logic and methodology of musicology. He has repeatedly participated in academic events held by the National Academy of Arts of Ukraine. His presentations at international and national conferences (49 in total) explore relevant issues in musical culturology, performance practice, and higher music education.
O. Sokol is the author of over 160 scholarly publications. In addition, he has contributed to press articles, radio and television broadcasts, and edited academic collections — in total, 238 musicological works. His development of the theory and classification of musical remarks and articulations represents a significant contribution to Ukrainian musicology. He also pioneered a new direction in musicological thought — the theory of the expressive-linguistic style in music. For many years, he chaired the Specialised Academic Council for the defense of Candidate theses in “Musical Art” at the Odesa National Music Academy named after A. Nezhdanova. He served as Head of the Department of Music Theory and Composition (1977–2018), Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs (1986–2000), and Rector of the Odesa National Music Academy (2000–2018).

He is also a member of the Specialized Academic Council D 41.857.01 for the defense of Candidate and PhD theses at the Odesa National Music Academy. Under his guidance, 9 PhD Candidates of Sciences, 3 PhDs of Sciences, 43 Masters, and 44 musicologists (a total of 99 individuals) have defended their academic work. He has repeatedly served as General Director of prestigious international and national music competitions. As an educator, he teaches a number of specialized authorial courses for postgraduates, Master's students, and undergraduates at the Odesa National Music Academy. A notable aspect of his scholarly and creative work is his monologue-style television appearances on Odesa’s "Dumska TV" with a series on the contemporary scientific-philosophical-humanitarian topic: “Humanism and Music” (2019–2020).
O. Sokol is also the author of numerous musical compositions, including: “Marusya Churai,” “We Walk the Same Paths” for a bandura ensemble; songs for bandura ensemble with folk instrument orchestra — “Necklace,” “Zaporizhzhia Duma,” “The Soul is Immortal”; children’s choir piece “Song of Friendship” from the “Vocal Warm-Up” collection; “Hymn of the A. Nezhdanova Academy”; the piece “Skomoroshyna” — an arrangement of the world-renowned “Shchedryk” by M. Leontovych, and more.
