After graduating from the Historical and Theoretical Faculty of the I.P. Kotlyarevsky Kharkiv Institute of Arts, Serhiy Tyshko pursued postgraduate studies at the P.I. Tchaikovsky Kyiv State Conservatory in the Department of Music History (1976–1981). Upon completing his postgraduate studies in 1981, he began working at this department, subsequently earning the academic degrees of Candidate of Art Studies and Associate Professor, and later — Doctor of Art Studies and Full Professor. From 1996 to 2000, he served as Professor of the Department of Music History of the Ethnic Groups of Ukraine and Music Criticism at the P.I. Tchaikovsky National Music Academy of Ukraine. In 1998, he made a significant contribution to the establishment of the Department of Theory and History of Culture at this institution, which he headed for over twenty years. He demonstrated a remarkable talent for academic leadership, integrating into the educational process a modern concept that combined general humanities, cultural studies, and art studies. Today, S. Tyshko continues to serve as a professor of this department.
S. Tyshko’s academic output includes seven monographs, the most recent of which was published in 2021, and more than sixty scholarly articles, all of which hold fundamental importance for the development of musicology and cultural studies. Several of his works have been published in German. He is a member of the research group on the history of music in Central and Eastern Europe at Leipzig University. He has repeatedly participated in organising and presenting at international academic conferences, including in Düsseldorf.
S. Tyshko is a renowned analytical scholar, recognised in Ukraine and abroad. He is the founder of a unique genre of cultural commentary, whose application in scholarly works has yielded significant results in musicology and cultural history, and has inspired many followers in different countries. He has successfully trained a generation of talented students, whose achievements attest to the existence of a scholarly school. His longstanding work in the State Accreditation Commission of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, as Chair and member of the expert council on art studies and cultural studies, enabled S. Tyshko to be at the forefront of developing the academic specialty “Theory and History of Culture” in Ukraine. He was one of the initiators and co-authors of the first qualification frameworks for this specialty, and one of the leading developers of cultural study concepts in musicology.

In addition, S.
