After completing the Acting Department of the Studio of Theatre Arts at the Lviv Academic Ukrainian Drama Theatre named after M. Zankovetska (1976), he worked as an actor at the Vinnytsia Ukrainian Music and Drama Theatre named after M. Sadovskyi. In 1981, he graduated from the Acting Department of the Kyiv State Institute of Theatrical Arts named after I. K. Karpenko-Karyi. From 1981 to 1989, V.Vovkun was an actor at the Chernivtsi Ukrainian Music and Drama Theatre named after O. Kobylianska. In 1989–1994, he was an actor at the Kyiv Theatre-Studio “Budmo!”. In 1994–1998, he served as Chief Stage Director of the Ukrainian State Centre of Cultural Initiatives of the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine.
From 1994 to 2005, V. V. Vovkun worked as Artistic Director of the State Enterprise “Ukraina Mystetska,” and in 2005–2007, as Artistic Director of the State Enterprise “State Concert Agency ‘Ukraina’.” In 2007–2010, V. Vovkun held the position of Minister of Culture and Tourism of Ukraine.
Since 2014, V. Vovkun has been the Artistic Director of the Lviv National Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre named after Solomiya Krushelnytska, and since 2017, the General Director–Artistic Head of this institution.
The artist’s creative output comprises more than 350 cultural and artistic projects (including productions of artistic performances, operatic oratorios, neomysteries, classical operas, and folk festivals) presented both in Ukraine and on stages in Germany, France, Poland, Georgia, and Serbia. His recent works include: Lys Mykyta by I. Nebesnyi (2020), Psalms of War by Ye. Stankovych (2023), Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors by I. Nebesnyi (2023), Dialogues of the Carmelites by F. Poulenc (2024).
V. Vovkun, Professor at the Lviv National Music Academy named after M. Lysenko, is the author of several publications, including: Frescoes, Mass Culture and the Directing of Mass Performances, The Art of Directing Mass Performances (textbook).

People’s Artist of Ukraine V. Vovkun has been awarded the Order “For Merit,” 3rd Class (2005), has repeatedly been recognized as the best director of mass performances in Ukraine by the National Music Rating “Profi,” and holds several church distinctions: the Order of Saint Equal-to-the-Apostles Prince Volodymyr the Great, 3rd Class (2006), the Order of “Christ the Savior” (2007), and the Order of Equal-to-the-Apostles Prince Volodymyr the Great, 2nd Class (2010).
