After graduating from the acting faculty of the Kharkiv I. Kotlyarevskyi Institute of Arts and working for nine years in the profession, M. Zakharevych worked as the director of the Zaporizhzhia State Ukrainian Music and Drama Theatre named after M. Shchors. Since 1992, he has been the General Director of the Ivan Franko National Academic Drama Theatre. M. Zakharevych's cooperation with the artistic directors of the First National Stage of Ukraine - S. Danchenko and B. Stupka - significantly diversified the repertoire and stage style of the company. In the early 2000s, owing to the creative and organisational activities of M. Zakharevych, the Foyer Theatre was successfully running here, and since 2011, the Serhiy Danchenko Chamber Stage has been housed in a newly built premises.
M. Zakharevych is actively engaged in pedagogical work, teaching the basics of theatre management at the Karpenko-Kary National University of Theatre, Cinema and Television in Kyiv and at the National Academy of Management Personnel of Cultural Workers.

M. Zakharevych is the author of scientific publications on the history of Ukrainian theatre, the monograph "Ivan Franko National Academic Drama Theatre. The Dynamics of Socio-Cultural Transformations of 1920-2001". In 2016, the artist defended his dissertation research and received the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. M. Zakharevych is a People's Artist of Ukraine, Honoured Worker of Culture, Doctor of Philosophy. He is a laureate of the M. Kropyvnytskyi and M. Krushelnytskyi art prizes.

He was awarded the Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise of the IV and V degrees, the Gold Medal of the National Academy of Arts of Ukraine.
